Music Week Poland. Second wave of artists announced!

Still buzzing with excitement after our first announcement, we are happy and proud to introduce the second group of Polish artists, who will be performing at Music Week Poland. Brace yourself for some emotionally deep electronica, breathtaking jazz and pioneering drum escapades.

The wonderful world of jazz and beyond

Ask any jazz fan about Polish jazz, and be prepared for hours and hours of frantic name checking. From the legendary greats (Krzysztof Komeda, Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski) to the contemporary artists. One of the standouts is Nene Heroine, whose music is truly captivating. The amount of talent, sensitivity and imagination this band is able to fit in their music is astonishing. Coming from the jazz aesthetic also is Hania Derej. This exceptional composer’s, pianist’s, arranger’s, conductor’s take on music (from jazz, to illustrative, to chamber to electronica) has gained her an international following. Speaking of the new classical, the kind where tradition is a founding stone, but the vision goes far beyond contemporary, are Yana’s works. This instrumentalist’s and composer’s works are romantic yet curt, rich yet minimal, sophisticated yet welcoming.

Electronic landscapes

The Polish electronic music tradition may not be as abundant as jazz, but our contemporary artists are a force to be reckoned with. Just listen to Janka, a project of Piotr Kaliński (also known for fis other endeavors such as Hatti Vatti, HV/NOON, Nanook of the North). Janka offers a dubby trip into the abyss so infinitely deep, that it instantly hypnotizes the listener. It’s profound and intimate at the same time. Still looking for a trip into the deepest nooks and crannies of a human soul? We recommend DEAE, an electro-acoustic duo whose music is highly illustrative, unrestricted, free. Listening to DEAE is an adventure of the purest kind, fun, dangerous, illuminating and great to immerse oneself in dreams. Coals, on the other hand, offer a trip to a convalescent home (that is the literal translation of their amazing new album’s title, „Sanatorium”). This Polish duo has been crafting new pop for a decade now and they are still one of a kind, instantly recognizable, but always surprising. They play with light and darkness with ease and respect for the heavy value of emotions.

Lost in rhythm

Rhythm has many faces and dimensions. Take Hajda Banda, a superb folk band, comprised of Polish and Belarusian musicians drawing from traditions of both countries. Their music is vibrant, inclusive (you don’t have to be a polka champion to have head-spinning fun), a proof that art can unite people in common joy. A mesmerizing, original take on tradition, with fascinating elements of jazz and electronica, can also be found in Gary Gwadera’s music. This drummer is a pioneer, an erudite and uncompromising artist. On a different note, very different in fact, you’ll find AcidSitter. Acid is the key word here, as psychedelia is the leading theme of AcidSitter, a band who open up spaces in your imagination just like the best artists in the 70’s did. This Polish-Japanese band revive the full color palette of rock’n’roll. Let’s stay in the 70’s for one more moment here. Let’s indulge ourselves in the sourish and funky rhythms of Cinnamon Gum, tinged with Latin flavors, African pulse and a generous flow of spacey vibes.
